Bio

Born in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, Sonja Arroyo is a New York–based mixed media artist whose work has evolved through more than two decades of artistic exploration.

Her passion for art developed in her early twenties while traveling throughout Europe and North America. Light, shadow, movement, and expression became lasting influences that continue to shape her work today.

After years of representational painting, including figurative work and landscapes, Sonja moved toward abstraction and increasingly dimensional modes of expression. Her desire to bridge the space between painting and sculpture led to her sculptural abstract faces in 2009 and, over time, to a broader exploration of mixed media, texture, reflective surfaces, organic forms, and unconventional materials.

Her work has been exhibited in galleries and shows, published internationally, and acquired by private collectors around the world.

Today, Sonja continues to explore mixed media without limiting herself to a single material or technique, creating dimensional works that invite reflection, presence, and quiet contemplation.

 

Artist Statement

My work is an exploration of reflection, presence, and the quiet connection between art, viewer, and space.

I am drawn to texture, movement, light, and reflective surfaces, as well as organic forms and unexpected details found in nature. Through mixed media and dimensional elements, I create work that changes with its surroundings, revealing different qualities as the light shifts and as the viewer moves around it.

I think of my work as a form of visual meditation—an invitation to slow down, look beyond the surface, and simply be present with what is in front of you.

Rather than limiting myself to a single material or technique, I allow each piece to develop through experimentation and intuition. That freedom to explore continues to shape the evolution of my work.

Ultimately, I hope to create artwork that offers more than something to look at—work that creates a moment of reflection, curiosity, and connection.
